About Postcards by Fabienne
Imagine you happened to know a friend, study companion, co-worker, airplane seat neighbour or consultant your company worked with who suddenly quit her tech job to turn her whole life upside down.
Not to travel in a camper van or live off-grid (nothing wrong with that).
But to study Marine Science.
Not in a tropical climate.
But in Northern Europe and the Arctic Ocean.
And then, she starts sending you weekly postcards featuring some documentary photography and stories about - well - keeping afloat in this mess called life.
Yep, that’s me - and Postcards by Fabienne 😊.
Totally unforeseeable spoiler:
National Geographics-like magic adventures and moments are a tiny fraction of it. There is certainly “an ordinary life” to be lived around exploring, doing the science (mostly behind a computer) and navigating the puddles and trenches of academics.
Postcards by Fabienne is the digital postal owl service that takes you along.
I still have to deal with, well, life and a cargo shipload of uncertainties. Novice-level proficiency.
Any in-between-the-lines life advice is to be taken at your own risk!
What you can expect when joining the postcard squad:
Unscheduled postcards (that's the whole point, right?) brought to your inbox with
carefully curated, well, I mean, spontaneously selected behind-the-scenes stories around my daily life as a PhD student in marine acoustics with
a pinch of humour, irony and a tiny bit of recklessness for the sake of my own mind.
I am glad you are curious (and brave) to join.
Pack your little heart and bring your mojo (or get inspired to find it again).
You can still leave your booty snuggled up with a blanket or hot chocolate on your couch.
My postcards are free.
Choosing a paid subscription simply supports keeping the postcard owl service afloat by ensuring sufficient coffee and chocolate supply during my PhD.
And if you have a great time and simply occasionally would like to share a cup with me, you can do so, too ✨:
About me

I was born and raised in Köln (Cologne), which is in the west of Germany.
I am a confessing millennial (born in ‘89).
I hold a bachelor’s degree in business informatics and worked 9 years as a software consultant and product owner in corporate IT.
I am married to an incredibly skilled wizard tackling emotional outbursts and navigating unforeseen life choices. A corgi named Molly completes the pack.
I love chocolate, coffee, wine, cheese, photography, computer games and pilates. The sequence might or might not be random.
In 2021, I decided to study for an interdisciplinary marine science degree in Scandinavia. Including several month on Svalbard, an island close to the Northpole.
I successfully graduated in the autumn of 2023 and I started a PhD fellowship in Marine Acoustics at the University of Aarhus (Denmark) in October 2024.
So glad to have you around!
Big hug,
